I'm traveling to Turin, Italy next week to catch one of the starts of the Rallye de Monte Carlo Historique. I've never been to a rally before and I'm looking for some tips on how to get the best experience. As of right now, I'm only planning on seeing the cars in the city, like in this video from 2012, but…

on the off chance I somehow make it out of the city to one of other points in the race, any advice for spectating? Another long shot, but will any other Oppos be there? Thanks!

I've never been to a European rally, so I can't give too much advice, because I know they do some things differently there, but here's some advice that applies to rally spectating anywhere:

1. When choosing a spot to spectate, first think about where momentum will likely take the car if the driver screws up, then, DON'T STAND THERE! This means places like the outside of corners, in ditches (or really any location near the road but below the level of the road), close to the road on either side of a jump's landing zone, etc.

2. Come prepared for all weather conditions. This is especially true in Monte. It may be unseasonably warm, it may rain, it may dump a foot of snow. Whatever it does, you may have to stand in it for a few hours. That tends to suck if you're not ready. As someone who essentially tried to crawl into his own backpack during a sudden extreme downpour at a rally, I am speaking from experience on that one.

3. Plan for long waits without cars. Usually if you hope to get any kind of halfway decent view of the road, especially at the more established spectator points, you need to arrive hours before the stage starts. Make sure you have a way to keep yourself entertained while waiting, be it smart phone games, a grill for cooking, a bean-bag tic-tac-toe game (I've seen it), or a set of lawn darts (probably a bad idea). You also might want to bring a folding chair so you're not on your feet the whole time you're waiting. You'll want to be standing when the cars actually go by though.

Thanks! Like I said, not sure if I'll actually make it to the point, but I'll be sure to keep this in mind if I do.
